Graduation Procedure

Stage1: Advisor to the Doctoral Dissertation

  1. Ph.D. students are required to sign up one advisor before the beginning of the first semester of their second year of study.
  2. Ph.D. students may apply to the doctoral class committee to change the title of the thesis and/or the advisor for any reason.
  3. The advisor may terminate the thesis guidance after seeking the consent of the director.

Stage2: Ph.D. Qualifying Examination

  1. A Ph.D. student who completes all the required courses and 2 electives in specific areas is eligible to apply for the Qualifying Examination.
  2. The qualification examination must pass the language requirement of the department and pass the qualification examinations of "Specialized Field Courses (Determined by the Supervisor)" and "Research Methods".
  3. The Qualifying Examination is held once every year. Students who fail are allowed to retake the examination once. In case of a second failure, students will be dismissed from the Ph.D. Program.
  4. Students who are unable to take the Qualifying Examination within five years after starting the program will be dismissed from the Ph.D. Program.
  5. Students who pass the Qualifying Examination and meet the regulations of Implementation Bylaws for Ph.D. and Master Degree Examination are eligible to be proposed doctoral candidacy by the Head of the Department of Business Management.

Stage3: The Doctoral Dissertation Advisory Board

After passing the qualifying examination, the Doctor Dissertation Advisory Board can be formed after consulting with the Head of the Department. The Dissertation Advisory Board is basically consistent of 3 members and the advisor as the convener.

Stage4: Thesis Research proposal

  1. Have not taken basic courses (6 courses selected from 3): (1) Production and Operations Management, (2) Marketing Management, (3) Human Resource Management, (4) Financial Management, (5) Management of Information Systems, (6) Strategic Management. For the six related courses, it is necessary to make up for the insufficient subjects in the master class.
  2. After the doctoral students contact the professor and the thesis committee, they should put forward a specific research plan.
  3. The research plan should include research motivation, research purpose, research methods, research outline and references.

Stage5: Procedure for Preliminary Examination

  1. Complete the thesis research plan description.
  2. The is conducted by oral test. The director convenes more than five full-time professors, associate professors or assistant professors of the school, and establishes an oral examination committee to review and hold a preliminary oral examination.
  3. The Preliminary Examination can be cancelled with the consent of the advisor.

Stage6: Ph.D. Degree Examination

  1. Pass the Preliminary Examination.
  2. Every Ph.D. candidate must collect at least 200 points from their publications., and the scores for each thesis are calculated as shown in the table below:

  1. TWO (published or accepted) papers related to the Ph.D. candidate’s dissertation topic in an SSCI/SCI/TSSCI/AHCI journal or Journal level must be A- or above in accordance with the Ministry of Science and Technology. The paper must be co-authored with the Ph.D. candidate’s advisor. If the paper is co-authored by the Ph.D. candidate and his/her classmates, the points shall be distributed by advisor. Every student author must sign their names on the distribution form and submit it to the department for records.
  2. Ranked in the top 10% of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) (including those who have been accepted), with a paper related to the subject of the doctoral dissertation, and attached proof of application, calculated as 200 points. If the paper is co-authored by the Ph.D. candidate and his/her classmates, the points shall be distributed by advisor and send to this department for record and must be published together with the advisor.

Required Publication:

ONE (published or accepted) papers related to the Ph.D. candidate’s dissertation topic in an SSCI/SCI/TSSCI/AHCI journal or Journal level must be A- or above in accordance with the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Choose EITHER ONE of the following conditions to fulfill:

Obtain the qualification of study/research abroad approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) or other associations with auditing system.

Have ONE paper presented by the Ph.D. candidate in any languages except Chinese at an international conference with peer-review system. The paper must be related to his/her dissertation topic.

Accumulation condition

Has ONE (published or accepted) papers related to the Ph.D. candidate’s dissertation topic in an EI/ECONLIT/TSCI journal.

Has ONE paper presented by the Ph.D. candidate in any languages except Chinese at an international conference with peer-review system. The paper must be related to his/her dissertation topic.

Participates in the national/international competitions of entrepreneurship/management, MOST programs or selected book writing and makes to the top three

Participates in the projects commissioned by enterprises or governmental units.

Choose EITHER ONE of the following conditions to fulfill:

  1. Propose and participate in the industry-university cooperative research projects offered by MOST or governmental units
  2. Propose and participate in the commissioned industry-university cooperative research projects of non-governmental units (enterprises and cooperation) approved by Office of Industrial Collaboration and Continuing Education Affairs, NSYSU.

Conditions not mentioned above shall be proposed to the Ph.D. Program committee for approval.
  • Integrity Appendix: One journal paper can only be ONE Ph.D. candidate’s application credential for Type A or Type B’s basic requirement. Journal paper declared as Type A cannot be other Ph.D. candidate’s application credential for Type B’s basic requirement.
  • Transparency Appendix: A Ph.D. candidate should submit his/her publication record to Ph.D. Program coordinator and Chair for examination. The co-presenters also need to be informed of the record.
  1. A Ph.D. candidate must present his/her research at least ONCE at “Seminar in Business Management” courses offered by Ph.D. Program.
  2. A Ph.D. student must take four seminar courses, “Seminar in Business Management I”, “Seminar in Business Management II”, “Seminar in Business Management III” and “Seminar in Business Management I” “Seminar in Business Management IV” before his/her application for Ph.D. Degree Examination.
  3. A Ph.D. candidate must take “Academic Research Ethics” course offered by the university before his/her application for Ph.D. Degree Examination.

Stage7: Doctor of Philosophy

Candidates for doctoral degree who have been reviewed by the Ministry of Education will be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
