  • CEO, Productivity Services International (Pty) Ltd. Productivity Improvement Consulting for large and medium-sized manufacturing corporations. Major clients included: AFCOL Furniture Manufacturers (26 subsidiary companies throughout Southern Africa), SABCO Coca Cola Bottling Co (Northern Africa Region and Southern Africa Region - Bottling Plants in 8 countries), and AECI (Dulux) Paint Manufacturing Co.

1995 – 2002 Entrepreneur, initiating and managing the following new ventures:

  • RPNJ Consulting, later Dave Robinson Consultancy, providing executive development & business coaching services to SME’s.

  • PSI (Pty) Ltd. – a Management Consulting company providing continuing executive education to corporate clients.

  • Free Ride Sports - a Surf School, surfwear and surfing equipment supply, manufacture and wholesale company.

  • Shimoda Research, now Shimoda Biotech (Pty) Ltd. - a leading biotech research laboratory established for the purpose of researching cancer therapeutic medicines.

  • Twenty Keys (Pty) Ltd (Port Elizabeth) - a company conducting Quality Assurance Audits and Training in Visual Productivity Management.

1993 – 1996 Executive Manager responsible for Productivity, Pharmacare-Lennon Ltd. (the largest pharmaceutical manufacturing company in the Southern Hemisphere, now Aspen-Pharmacare Ltd). My responsibilities included the executive management of the following divisions:

·Industrial Engineering, Packaging Technology, and Management Accounting.

·Responsible for designing and driving the World-Class Manufacturing Program, which I successfully implemented within three years.

·During this time, I twice ran the annual 3 day strategic planning conference of the company’s national executive team and also conducted Leadership Development Programs and Executive Workshops in ‘New Paradigm Thinking’ to support a planned culture change.

·I was also involved in negotiations with the Trade Union regarding proposed changes and was successful in achieving these.

1981 – 1993 Senior Projects Manager promoted to Manager (in 1982), National Productivity Institute of South Africa:

·I conducted National Research Projects, industry-wide development programs, and company-specific consulting assignments.

·As a leader of numerous project-specific cross-functional teams, and as manager of various semi-permanent multi-disciplinary consulting teams, I gained vast experience in the full range of business disciplines in the following industries:

o State and semi-state-owned Public Services,

o Furniture, Forestry, Saw-milling, Clothing, Textile, Printing, Packaging, Pharmaceuticals, Metals, Engineering, Agriculture, Mining, Professional Services and Retail.

o In 1988 I received the Chairman’s Award for achieving success in establishing a new Industry Unit serving 15 sectors of the Printing, Newspaper and Packaging Industry.

o Under my leadership, this Industry Productivity Unit was the top-performing Unit of the NPI’s Consulting Division for three consecutive years.

1979 – 1981 Regional Training Officer (Transvaal Region) promoted to Regional Manager (E.Cape & O.F.S.), Furniture Industry Training Board:

· I developed and presented training courses in Supervision and Production Planning to staff identified as potential leaders in member companies.

· I was responsible for a region of the Transvaal, consisting of 220 furniture manufacturers, where I personally advised and trained in over 60 firms.

· After my promotion, I expanded the scope of the company’s activities to a new geographical sector of the furniture industry, incorporating the Knysna Forest Region, and was rewarded with the Chairman’s Cup at the end of 1980 for the my successes in establishing the new region.

1975 – 1979 Trainee Furniture Maker / Furniture Maker, selected for Management Traineeship, in the Associated Furniture Manufacturing Companies Limited (AFCOL) Group of Companies, promoted to Assistant Production Manager.

· During my traineeship, I was exposed to all aspects of manufacturing, finance, marketing, sales and distribution.

· Promoted to Assistant Factory Manager at Madison Upholsterers, where I was responsible for Production Planning, Management Accounting, and Product Costing.

1971 – 1975 Retail Sales (part-time as scholar & student):

· Dodos Shoe Store, Main Street, Port Elizabeth

· Edworks Shoe Store, Commercial Centre.
